Ok, so...

I know that the OS image for these boards was made in January based on the timestamps. I also know that there have been A LOT of patches released for linux distros since then. However, when I run "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade," it gives...nothing. Out of curiosity, why don't we get security patches...?

they have conflicting repos that have never worked so essentially there is no security with this garbage i suggest not exposing it to the internet as linksprite has backdoor user accounts embedded in their images.  read back in the forum posts and you will find the reference.

if you want a better board option and insist on linksprite products look at the pcduino3 nano and install armbian or some other A20 image on that and stay away from these guys,

It's definitely sounding that way... Basically got them because they were uber-cheap on ebay, and starting to understand why...

My main "server" is an odroid u3 running debian; had hoped to use this thing simply as a serial datalogger from one of my arduino projects. But not looking like I'll be able to use it for much of anything unfortunately.

Good to know about the extra backdoor stuff, I'll go poking around.

i use mine as 3d printer server thats about it.  its sad that the product is trash in the end but i will say it is quite stable.  i had it run as NAS project with 24/7 ontime for 6 months before i unplugged it but it never required a reboot.

Weeellllll...

I'm guessing that updates were disabled on the board intentionally, because after enabling them and installing updates, it just ends up in an endless reboot cycle. But since the HDMI and serial console connections don't work, I can't see what it's complaining about, so I'm going to have to rebuild the SD card from a new basic image again.

I think I'm done with this...the boards seem like pieces of junk, unless someone from Linksprite can provide ways to make them work...securely and reliably...I've got much better things to do with my life.

Lesson learned :'(

I guess this has just become an addicting challenge for me...

I've spent several hours today working on the whole "install patches, get a reboot loop" issue. I've basically been installing the patches in groups until I've come down to the last few, and it looks like the issue is with the upgrade to the libudev1 and udev packages. After doing that one, I end up in a reboot loop, but all of the others are ok. However, since I can't get serial or video output, I can't tell why it's rebooting....... If I figure it out, I'll post back of course.

On an aside, since I can't get video output, I was able to trim down the packages pretty significantly, and am now able to comfortably run from a 1G SD card. The packages I've removed so far are:

apt-get remove lxde-* gpicview leafpad lxappearance lxde-core lxde-common lxinput lxmusic lxpanel lxsession* lxshortcut lxterminal openbox pcmanfm xarchiver xscreensaver lxpolkit lxrandr lxshortcut lxtask xserver-* lxdm bluez* fontconfig* linux-sound-base pcduino-scratch alsa-utils libasound* ttf-* samba-common dbus-x11 wpasupplicant ppp isc-dhcp-server btrfs-tools libavcodec54 libdrm-nouveau2 libdrm-radeon1 avahi-daemon libpulse0
apt-get autoremove

At this point I've basically got an almost-fully-patched 14.04.5 image:

Haha thanks :P I put it on the shelf several times, but for whatever reason kept coming back to it. I guess it's the challenge of it all, as absolutely exasperating as it's been... And yeah, still kinda wishing I'd spent the money on an rpi instead, but I guess it's been a learning experience at least, right? :P And a lot more respect to the folks that came up with stuff like uboot, etc.

It's really been interesting reading the threads about the H8 and allwinner stuff in general on other forums. TBH, I'm not expecting a lot of support for the H8 for a while; most of the third-party developers seem to be kind of shunning it.

To Put a hold on udev and libudev1, you can run the following; may "unhold" them someday if I want to retry the upgrade...

root@whiteboard:/home/linaro# apt-mark hold udev
udev set on hold.
root@whiteboard:/home/linaro# apt-mark hold libudev1
libudev1 set on hold.
root@whiteboard:/home/linaro# apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  libudev1 udev
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.

Since I finally got the serial debugger working on the board, I was able to get the last bits of the logs before it reboots (after installing the udev patches) :

This is what's displayed when you upgrade udev and libudev1; doesn't seem to be any error messages?

I was able to update my pcduino8 by commenting out the pcdiuno8 and adding in the main universe.  But before adding in the main universe,  I did apt-get update and some pcduino overlay updated. So, after the pcduino overlay update, commenting out the pcduino line and then performing apt-get update, it seemed to have updated and rebooted fine.

put of paranoia I disabled the linearo account.

Woot, thanks for the info. Got mine mostly patched as well. If I could just get this thing to use all 8 cores all the time like it is supposed to I'd be happy with it since it would be doing what I got it for, but this using 4 of the 8 cores is pissing me off.
