Can someone please point me to a tutorial that shows how to put NodeMCU on the Linknode D1 and run a lua script?

I think I have the NodeMCU firmware flashed onto the ESP8266, but I do not get any response from it over the serial port.  ESPlorer and luatool sees no response from the Linknode D1.

I am able to send code over to the linknode d1 with the arduino IDE without a problem.  I am using the esptool utility from the Arduino IDE (since I know it works).  Also, this is running on a Mac, but I've seen the same symptoms with Ubuntu linux.

This is how I flashed the NodeMCU to the ESP8266:

/Users/ccurt1/Library/Arduino15/packages/esp8266/tools/esptool/0.4.9/esptool -vv -cd nodemcu -cb 921600 -cp /dev/cu.wchusbserial1420 -ca 0x00000 -cf ~/Downloads/nodemcu-master-9-modules-2017-01-04-02-04-52-float.bin

I figured out my problem.  I need to do a flash_erase with esptool before I wrote the NodeMCU firmware.

Thanks.
